im sorry the reason why it works in manga its cuz the artist usually know how to properly use contrast and line weight, without it it just looks very unfinished plus japan's culture on being efficient is just toxic in the long run

For most of comic history, indie comics and magazines were in black and white both for speed and to keep print costs down. These aren't issues one has to consider when doing webcomics though because print isn't a concern for most people.

西洋の主流白黒コミックを見つけるのが難しいのは、たいていカラーで再版されて（しかもグラデーションで線の強弱が台無しにされる）からなんだ。でもインディーやヨーロッパ、新聞連載を探せば見つかるよ。

白黒＋色相フィルターやグラデーションマップをかけるのは、ウェブコミックに最高かもしれない（章やシーンごとに変えるのもあり）。手間はほぼ同じなのに、印刷コストの制約がないことを活かせるんだ。
i think black and white + slapping on a hue filter or gradient map could be sick for a webcomic (maybe varying by chapter or scene). basically the same amnt of effort but taking advantage of how ur not restricted by printing costs

ウェブコミックなら、すでに大手クリエイターか、読者の成長を気長に待てる人でない限り、カラーにすべきだよ。たとえ初歩的でも、白黒よりずっと注目を集められるから。
With webcomics unless you are already a big creator or are willing to be very patient with readrrship growth you should go with color. Even if its rudimentary it will get you much more attention than if you went black and white.

日本の漫画がモノクロなのは、ビジネスモデルが物理的に可能な限り安くすることだったから。新聞みたいに電車で読めて、同じように罪悪感なく捨てられるものなんだよ。
Japanese comics are monochrome because their business model was being as cheap as physically possible. Something you can read on the train like a newspaper and similarly dispose of without feeling bad.

カラーのウェブコミックと白黒のをしばらく試したけど、白黒のほうが断然早く作れたのは同意する！唯一の問題は、白黒で読むのが嫌いな読者もいて、白黒だと見た瞬間に読まずに離脱しちゃうことだね。
I tried making a coloured webcomic and a black and white one for a while and i gotta agree the bw one was faster to make! Only issue is, that there are some readers out there who dont like reading in bw, so when they see its like that they click off without even bothering

西洋では多くのコミックがカラーだったから、そっちの作家はカラーじゃなきゃダメだという印象を持ってるんだと思う。新聞漫画には白黒もあったけど、標準ではなく例外だったんだ。
I’m pretty sure that, in the western side of things, a lot of comics were coloured, so many of the artists in such countries have the impression that it must be in colour. Some newspaper comics were b&w, but they were the outliers rather than the standard.

実際に完結した物語を届けた数少ないウェブコミック作家の一人で、しかも二度もやったのがPoeなんだ。そこから学べることはたくさんあるよ。
One of the few webcomic artists who actually delivered a complete story, and twice at that, was Poe. Lots of lessons to be learned there.

自分が読んだ白黒コミックは『Scud』とカラー化前の『TMNT』くらいで、もっと見かけないのが不思議なくらい。小規模インディーコミックではもっと一般的なんだろうね。『Cerebus』も白黒だと知ってる。
Only black and white comics I've read are Scud and the pre-colour TMNT and I'm surprised I don't see more tbh I'm guessing they're a lot more common among smaller indie comics, I know that Cerebus is also black and white

自分は時間がなさすぎて、色塗りまでしてたら章を出せないから、ウェブコミックを白黒で描いてる。それでも出すだけで精一杯だけどね。でも本当におすすめ。章あたり半年かかってたのが2週間くらいになったよ。
Im doing my webcomic in black and white because I simply do not have time to churn out chapters if I have to color it in. I barely have time to churn them out at all anyway. But I do really recommend it. It took me down from half a year for a chapter to about 2 weeks.
