I actually know this and deliberately perform excessive displays of kindness and hospitality on my Japanese in-laws as a flex after they were rude to my mother over her being fat (she is but it is the principle)
They can’t repay me, they never would be able to, they must simply stew in my magnanimity.
I’ve been doing it for five years and the ledger only grows. I’m going to a wedding in Tokyo and my gift is the traditional money and an unsolicited old sake vintage.
They will seethe and be forced to accept it with a smile, knowing I have bested them in a way they can never overshadow

I'm the kind of person who talks to strangers in the bar and I believe if I ever visited Japan people would just think "oh no…" as soon as they saw me.

I'd be Japan's greatest threat because I never want to be paid back for my acts of generosity.

I’ll never understand why people in my country are so obsessed with Japan. Y’all are free to do it your way, but I’m glad it’s not like that here.

Terrible… but it appears to work.
This is a kind of herd reinforcement mechanism that maintains stasis without empathy. Makes one question if affective altruism has been beaten out of the population.

But that is contrary to what we Americans see as hospitable.

I have understood omotenashi my entire life even though I never knew this word until today. Thank you for teaching me that I am actually part Japanese inside. I did not know until today. The honor is mine.

We think: "Who authorized this transaction? Now I have to buy cookies."

I never would have guessed this. I thought all Japanese were just kind by nature, kind from birth. In fact, I'm going to start bowing to people.

in america we would call that a very cynical and tit for tat way to view relationships. sucks to be you.

This confuses me. If everyone is generous, then everyone owes everyone else equally, and it comes out to 0. What is the problem?

If I've learned anything from Japanese RPGs it is that sometimes people will just give you items for talking to them and also you can go into their homes and take a few things from containers or book cases and nobody will notice.
