日本にいた頃のホットドリンクの自動販売機が本当に恋しいんだ。寒い冬の日に外出して手を温めるためにホットコーヒーやココアを手にするのは特別な感じがするんだよね。もちろん、一番恋しい食べ物は、電車の駅の隣にある小さなラーメン屋さんのラーメンだ。見逃しがちな小さな店だけど、一度試してよかったと思う。メニューは大したことないけど、安くて素晴らしいラーメン（チャーシューか、少し甘い揚げ豆腐の細長い三角形と一緒に食べることが多かった）だったよ。
I really miss the hot drink machines from my time in Japan. There’s something special about grabbing a hot coffee or cocoa to warm up your hands while out and about on a cold winter day.Of course, the food I miss most is ramen from a tiny place next to my train stop. One of those hole-in-the-wall places that are easy to miss, but I’m glad I tried it one time. Not a big menu or anything, just amazing ramen (typically got it with chashu or these thin triangles of slightly sweet, fried tofu) for cheap.

My ex moved to Japan and told me about how there were robots everywhere and how the crazy vending machines were, and about the food in general, but I didn’t truly grasp what he meant until watching these videos. It’s nuts. Wish we had some of these in America. The attention to detail sometimes is amazing. Like carrots cut into flowers… just such a nice touch.

I’m going to be honest, no matter how many times I see these videos of vending machines around Japan I get amazed. People just don’t damage the machines, usually you spot them very ofent and the variety of products they sell is quite interesting. I guess the machines wouldn’t last not even a day in my third world country 🙄

I was stationed in Japan in the 80’s while serving in the military. I remember off base the Japanese had beer and cigarette vending machines (out along the streets) in Japan. No one broke into them or anything. I remember thinking to myself “There’s no way they could do this in the States.”

変だな。アメリカでは80年代後半から90年代初めにかけて、こんなに高級なドリンクマシンがあったんだ。同じマシンで、アイスとソーダ、ホットコーヒー、オレンジジュースが出せたんだ。でも、90年代半ばには全部なくなっちゃって、それ以来見たことがないんだ。衛生面が難しいから、取り除かれたのかなって思ってたんだ。バーガーやその他の食べ物が出るマシンはなかったよ。それにしても、日本はいつも最高なものを持ってるね。
It’s weird. We used to have fancy drink machines like this in the United States back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The same machine would give you a cup of ice and soda, or a hot coffee, or orange juice. They seemed to have removed all such machines by mid 90’s and I’ve never seen them again. I assumed they were hard to keep sanitary. Never any food machines like this with burgers and what not. That’s pretty cool. Japan always has the coolest shit.
