I visited Japan for the first time in 2017, and it changed my life forever, I am constantly trying to find ways to go back, been back every year since and even lived for 7 months enrolled in a Japanese language school in Kyoto because of how much I appreciate and love its culture and customs. The fact that theres so much harmony among its citizens and putting the collective first instead of the individual is so much more rewarding overall. I hope one day I can move there, that is my dream, be able to buy an Akiya house in the countryside and live there is my ultimate goal, and obviously be proficient in 日本語. Please Japan stay Japanese.

I’ve been to 30 countries and many of those I’ve stayed for more than a month to immerse myself more. Japan was the only of them that I felt a genuine dread right after coming back home. I feel that I forever changed as a person after being in it. In the short 40 days I’ve been there I’ve been to 22 cities and villages, met people who I deeply bonded with, got in touch with nature, learned about respect and cohesion and made me wonder about everything is going wrong with my own country. I hope to move to Japan one day to deepen this knowledge even more and then move on with the acquired experience.

Been a visitor to Japan 5 times over the past 10 years and as an African American, something I always miss when I come home is the peace of mind I felt just walking down the street at any given time. Yeah there’s crime there, and people might feel a certain way about my skin color, but even if you didn’t like me, there’s way less of a chance that I would be physically harmed over it. Most western countries also have so much historical baggage that we’re still dealing with that it feels like you’re carrying it on your shoulders from day to day. When you visit Japan you’re free from a lot of that and it just feels nice 😊

Great video and timely as I’m in Tokyo on a solo trip here for the first time. It’s amazing and beautiful but also overwhelming. What I wish most is that I spoke more Japanese and could more fully connect with people. The people are very kind and I get by as I visit but I’d rather that I could carry on a full conversation and more deeply experience Japan. I clicked on your video because I was interested in finding out about another point of view or other reasons why visiting Japan changes you. I’ve watched it twice now and I can’t believe how accurately you describe what I’m feeling. Such a great video. I live in the UK and I’ve been to Japan 3 times: 2015 (2 weeks) , 2019 (1 week) and 2025 (1 month) and this video really resonated with me. Since we came back from our last trip I had a little post Japan depression and I found myself comparing things a lot more this time to previous visits. I did find myself questioning why the simple things like respect, politeness and cohesion feel so difficult in the UK. Ever since my last trip I have been considering buying a house in Japan and staying there for a few months per year

(When I gave a small gift of a little sketch I’d made to a helpful shop assistant there, her heartfelt, profound appreciation for it left me feeling much more as if I had just received a gift FROM her ! I’m the complete opposite of you. I moved to the UK (London) in 2007 without knowing much about the country, the culture, or even the language. Coming from Japan, where everything runs almost flawlessly, life in the UK initially felt inconvenient—but also fun! When the tube didn’t come on time I just laughed because it never really happened in Japan. I found the lack of 24-hour convenience stores and shops surprisingly refreshing, and using a wood stove in winter felt so much cosier. Now, nearly two decades later, I’ve stopped comparing Japan and the UK. Each has its pros and cons, and I’ve come to love them both in different ways.

That was told so well…..Yes..I have that feeling. I visited (from UK solo) Japan twice in 2023…It stole my heart. I hated having to return to the UK.I was in a dark place and suffering depression from losing my partner to cancer in 2017. It gave me a nostalgia for a life I’ve never lived. And unless I have a miracle..I shall never enjoy the experience of Japan again. This saddens me greatly.

I studied Japanese culture and college and I’m one of those people who defends it having never been there. The feeling you describe is the feeling I had when I worked with people who grew up during the Great depression, ww2 and the Korean war. I’ve been sitting and thinking what message this video gives me as a foreigner. You’re validating and giving an explanation to a feeling that foreigners get when they come and visit. Yet I see people taking it as reassurance in their pursuit to integrate. Was that part of your message? I rather think of it as encouragement to educate others in order to preserve the countries positive and unique aspects. One, as gratitude to pay back for the wonderful experience visiting gave us. Two, we want to preserve something that we find both valuable and irreplaceable. A call to do our part in preservation through understanding and reflecting, NOT to take more without giving back
